1920s mantel in top quality mahogany
This is a top quality fireplace mantel made in the early 1920s in the Manchester region of England.
It has classical lines rather than being in the Deco style that was coming to prominence at this time. The "caddy" top of the mantel, and the scalloped top of the fireplace are elegant features of this fireplace surround.
The red mahogany which has been chosen for the fascia of this mantel is of top quality, similar to that used for fiddle-backs.
The mantel has a very deep rebate, and small cut-outs at the base of its lags for a hearth. It would likely have been fitted together with a marble backpanel and matching hearth.
The original lacquer was in poor condition and has been stripped. But the price includes refinishing by a french polisher, and the depth of shine and colour to some extent can be chosen by the buyer.
