Art Deco all tiled fireplace
Relax in your scroll armed easy chair or sofa and enjoy the warmth of a real fire from this unusual fireplace rarity, an Art Deco all tiled fireplace with scrolled shoulders.
This fireplace is a virtuoso piece of the fireplace makers craftsmanship. Skilfully executed in two shades of beige / brown mottled glazed tiles, the design is striking in both large and small details.
The main body, in the lighter of the two mottled glazes, is split into 3 areas. At the top is a subtly curved back panel to a shelf with a typical Art Deco stripe and diamond detail made from the darker tiles. The shelf itself is made from the darker of the two tiles.
Under the shelf is a frieze sectioned by fingers of the darker tile and framed at the bottom with moulded zigzag patterned tiles.
Beneath the frieze is the fireplace opening recess with curved pilasters of finger tiles leading back to stepped fireplace opening blocks.
At their outer edge the quarter round columns end at the raised scroll shapes that are the signature feature of the whole fireplace.
Fireplaces in the 1930s often had raised edges to the hearths but they were seldom made from 6 inch square tiles as in this case.
